Russian naval forces marching towards Seoul, Korea according to the Dutch newspaper Leeuwarder courant dated 16 March 1898

An item dated Yokohama, Japan 15th reported that a Russian steamship of the Voluntary Fleet arrived at Chemulpo coming from Port Arthur, Manchuria. At Chemulpo were 57 navy soldiers disembarked which marched towards Seoul provided with a large quantity of victuals and ammunition.

1. The Japanese Empire had important interests in Korea and Manchuria. After a disastrous war were the Chinese interests in Korea in fact eliminated. The Manchurian harbour Port Arthur was of main interest for the Russian merchants and her navy. Russia had also important interests in Korea. Between 1897 and 1910 the Korean Empire managed to stay independent from Japan.
