American auxiliary cruiser USS Buffalo forced to enter Newport suffering problems according to the magazine Mitteilungen aus dem Gebiete des Seewesens dated 1899 no. 1

An item reported that the US cruiser Buffalo underway from New York, USA towards Manila, Philippines with stores for the squadron commanded by admiral Dewey and 700 men as replacement was forced already after two days to enter Newport with major problems. More details were unknown al became clear that she was to be docked at Brooklyn, USA. Since she was bought from the Brazilian government occurred continuous problems.(1)

1, Launched by Newport New Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company, Newport News, Virginia, USA on 31 May 1893 as the El Cid for account of the Southern Pacific Railroad’s Morgan Line. Completed in August 1893 was she bought by Brazil and renamed Nichtheroy. On 11 June 1898 sold to the USA and fitted out as the auxiliary cruiser Buffalo. She was finally sold in September 1927.
