Crew of Dutch coastal defence ship HMS Kortenaer drugged at Funchal, Madeira in December 1903

An item reported that the Dutch coastal defence ship HMS Kortenaer (1) captain J. Cardinaal left on 16 December 1903 Nieuwediep, Netherlands towards the Dutch West Indies. Underway was Funchal, Madeira between 25-30 December visited. Later wrote her commanding officer that he was not very pleased with what happened there. Despite that sailors were just allowed to go ashore at daylight several came drunk back. The consul said that in the several bars along the berth a drugged wine was given ending that the sailors lost al their money and belongings. Some of the men were during several hours intoxicated.

Crew numbered 260 men. Coal bunker capacity 330 ton. Costs when fitted out for the first time ƒ 2.792,482. Two screws. Speed 16,0 knots. Engines and boilers manufactured by the shipyard Kon. Mij. De Schelde, Vlissingen, Netherland.
