French fleet minesweeper Alençon (M612) 1952-1983


Laid down as the American AM-453 of the AM-450 class minesweepers at the Bellingham Shipyards Company at Bellingham on 1 November 1952, launched on 11 April a year later, completed on 23 June 1954 and as the M 612 handed over to France on 16 July. By the US Navy on 7 February 1955 classified as the ocean minesweeper MSO-452.Former USN AM 453. Stricken in 1983 and broken up at Landevennec, France. With a displacement of 700 (standard)-795 (full load) tons and as dimensions 165 (waterline)-171 (over all) x 35 x 10’4”-10½ feet. The two General Motors diesels supplied 1,600 bhp allowing a speed of 13,5 (design)-14 (trials) knots and with a speed of 10 knots a range of 3,000 nautical miles. The crew numbered 64 men. The armament consisted of 1-4cm gun and 2-0.50 machine guns.
