Enemy submarine activities in the Atlantic Ocean according to the U.S. Joint Intelligence Committee. Daily summary dated 3 January 1942

An item reported that the number of enemy submarines in the Atlantic Ocean increased. There were 5-6 on westerly courses underway towards Newfoundland with others near the Faroes, Azores and Freetown [Sierra Leone?]. One submarine was seen off Swan Island position 16.25 north and 84.00 west in the Caribbean 110 miles north of eastern Honduras and off the Portland (Me.) lightship was a sound contact. The J.I.C. commented that isolate contacts (sound or fleeting views of periscopes) must be considered to be inconclusive.

Honduras exporting shrimps to the USA according to the Commercial Fisheries Review dated August 1964 No. 8

An item reported that a fishery firm active in Honduras exported 500,000 pounds of shrimp to the USA in the 7-months season ending in the first quarter of 1964. The firm operated a fleet of 14 fishing vessels.

The armament of the Dutch merchant ship Alcor in the Second World War

According to the list and supplements 1-2 on 13 September 1945 BDZ No. 673sent by the office of armament the Royal Netherlands Navy located at 41 East 42nd Street, New York 17, USA. There were no complete records available, so there were several sources used to compile the list. Sometimes the kind of guns gave indirect information regarding the origin such as 4”/BL and 12 pounder guns were British mostly supplied in the United Kingdom, Canada or Curacao. The 4.7” guns were old Japanese guns placed on some vessels in the begin of the war at Singapore and some 4” guns in the same period at Surabaya, Dutch East Indies. The trade in which the ship was used gave also an indication were the guns were supplied, for example involved in the Pacific trade means supplied at the West Coast

Gross tonnage 3,526 tons, net tonnage 2,121 tons, deadweight 6,173 tons, grain capacity 362,000 cubic feet, bale capacity 332,000 cubic feet and dimensions 111.00 x 15.25 x 7.47 metres.

The Dutch newspaper Provinciale Zeeuwse Courant dated Tuesday 21 August 1951 reported that she arrived om Saturday 18 August coming from Rotterdam, Netherlands at the shipyard Kon. Mij. De Schelde, Vlissingen to undergo an examination and if needed repairs. She is described as a tanker of Honduras.  Docked in the Eiland dock (order 37059) between Friday 21 September 16.00 o’clock-Monday 8 October 18:00 o’clock.

Ex-Voco renamed 1934, owner Vacuum Oil Co. Ltd., London, since 1933 by Standard Transportation Co. Ltd., Hong Kong and Toorak renamed 1949,  owned by Socony-Vacuum Transportation Co. Ltd., London, England, call sign HRII. Gross tonnage  8,627 tons, under deck 8,957 tons, net tonnage 5,205 tons and as dimensions 460.0 x 62.8 x 36.4 feet. Delivered in December 1927 by Lithgows Ltd., Port Glasgow, Scotland. Since 1949 owned by Soc. Maritima Miraflores Ltd [A.S. Onassis)., Puerto Cortes, Honduras and broken up by Eckhardt&Co., Hamburg, Germany in 1961.

Russian tanker Zigdid or Zugdidi 1970-1995

Georgia-flagged, homeport Batumi, IMO 7022069, call sign UQRO. Since 1992 Honduras-flagged, homeport San Lorenzo. Completed by Shipyard 184/STX Finland Rauma, Rauma, Finland in September 1970. Disposed at Aliaga, Turkey in on 28 August 1995.  Part of a group consisting of the Altaj, Aktau, Amgun, Aktubinsk, Aykhal, Rauma, Adygeni, Anakliya, Aynazhi, Kola, Izkora, Khersones, Akhaltsikhe, Yugansk, Ararat, Ayon, Omsk, Autse, Biryuza Antares, Zugdidim Auseklis, Zhalgiris, Abava, Prut, Svrgutnef, Anyuy, Neftegoresk, Tarkhankut, Ilim, Aspindza, Dabrecen, Neftekamsk, Sakhalinneft, Sibirneft and Rumbula. The Project 160 or called by the NATO the Altay-class consisted of the Kola, Elnya, Egorlyk, Izhora, Prut and Ilim.

General technical characteristics of the Altay, the details could differs from ship to ship. Launched by Neue Brand Werft, Oldenburg, Germany with yard number 133 on 16 September 1954 and delivered on 12 November 1954 to Ferdinand Müller Reederei, Bremen, Germany. Since March 2000 no longer registered in Lloyd’s Register, fate unknown.

East German tug Bison 1973-2005?


Built in 1973 at the Leningradskiy Petrozavad, Leningrad with a gross register tonnage 183 tons and as dimensions 29,32 x 8,49 x 3,02 metres. Het 2x2 6 cylinder Russkiy engines supplied 1.200 ahp. She was property of the Bagger-, Bugsier- und Bergungsreederei, Rostock, since 1990 as the Bison from the Brugse Scheepssloperij, Brugge, Belgium, since 1993 as the Aquarius A from Martin Davis (Honduras-flagged, San Lorenzo), since 1994 as the Aquarius A from the West Coast Towing Company in Swansea, since 1994 as the Megan Mai from the West Coast Towing Company, Cardiff. Since 1 January 1996 the Ecuador-flagged Guayas. IMO 750851 and call sign HC3088 in 2005 still mentioned.

Built by by Rauma-Repola O/Y, Rauma, Finland in 1968. Russia-flagged, homeport Batumi, Georgia, IMO 6818447 and call sign UWPC. Later call sign 5NTH. Disposed at Alang, Bangladesh on 13 September 2004 to be broken up. In 1991 homeport Odessa, Ukraine. Renamed 1996 Kenmary, homeport San Lorenzo, Honduras and since 1998 Lagos, Nigeria (Operated by Olimpex Nigeria Ltd.). In 1997 temporarily the Honduras-flagged Fred?

Several Spanish ships arrived at Cadiz, Spain returning from the Americas according to the Dutch newspaper Rotterdamse courant dated 18 March 1769

An item dated Cadiz, Spain 17 February reported the arrival since 7 February of ships returning from the Americas namely the St. Geertrude and Vigilant from Honduras and Havana, Cuba loaded with indigo and so on, a packet boat and the Porto Velna. The ship from Havana was loaded with sugar, the one from Carthagena and Havana with cotton, cacao, gayac [guayacan or pokhout?] and Havana sugar. The money loaded at Carthagena was left behind at Havana on board of the warship St. Jaques which was daily expcected to arrive. On board of the Vigilant was d’Ulloa crowns representative at Louisiana but forced to return by the council and inhabitants of this colony.

Owned by Kelford Overseas S.A., Panama.

Built in 1930 by Barclay, Curle&Co. Ltd Clydeholm Shipyard, Whiteinch, Glasgow, Scotland with yard number 638 for account of Vaccaro Bros&Co., New York, USA, since 1933 owned by Standard Navigation Corporation Inc., La Heibe, Honduras and managed by Standard Fruit&Steamship Company Inc., New York, USA (call sign HRBC), renamed Leeuwarden in February 1959 owned by N.V. Maatschappij ‘Leeuwarden’ and N.V. Gebroeders van Uden’s Scheepvaart- en Agentuur Maatschappij, both at Rotterdam, Netherlands (call sign  PFMR), laid up at Tampa, Florida, USA on 27 June 1961, sold in 1963, renamed Tropicana II of All Ocean Shipping Corporation, Panama in 1964, renamed Santa Ana of All Ocean Shipping Corporation, Panama in 1965, sold to Canadian interests in 1970, sold to be broken up to NB Intershira, Rotterdam, Netherlands and resold towards Italy, arriving on 26 November 1970 at Cantieri Navale Di Portovene, La Spezia, Italy where in February 1971 with the scrapping was started. Apparently renamed Desguazado in 1970.  Seriously damaged by fire broken out after a collision in 1957 while laying at New Orleans, USA was she towed by the Dutch tug Cycloop later assisted by the Titan towards Vlissingen, Netherlands departing on 15 September 1957, arriving on 18 October 1957 at the shipyard Kon. Mij. De Schelde to be repaired. A so-called banana boat.

Docked in the Island dry dock between Friday 22 November 17.00 o’clock-Thursday 19 December 1957 9.00 o’clock, between Tuesday 22 April 13.00 o’clock-29 April 1958 17.00 o’clock and Saturday 6 September 9.30 o’clock and Wednesday 10 September 1958 15.30 o’clock.

Germany-flagged, IMO 9068873. As the Burkana Honduras-flagged; homeport San Lorenzo, call sign HGSE6 and managed by Wolff-Kraftfahrzegtecjnik, Bad Dierkheim, Germany. Bought by MWB Motorenwerk Bremerhaven GmbH in 1983 as an old tug to be used for training in ships technology. Restored and repaired and in in 2015 executing successful trials. Built by Schichauw Werke, Elblag, Poland as the large harbour navy tug Föhr (Y821) in 1962. Class: 724. Commissioned on 4 October 1962 and decommissioned on 29 September 1994. Gross tonnage 153 tons, summer deadweight 47 tons and as dimensions 30,60 x 7,45 x 3,oo metres. Horsepower 71kW. Speed 12 knots.

General technical characteristics. Total capacity of cargo oil tanks and deeptanks 56.778 cubic metres. Single geared turbine supplying 19.000-21.090 bhp. Single screw. Speed 17 knots and a navigation range of 10.000 miles. Gross register tonnage 32.841 tons, net register tonnage 16.387 tons, deadweight 49.370-deadweigh cargo capacity 44.670 tons and as dimensions 214,00 (between perpendiculars)-230,55 (over all) x 31,00 (moulded) x 15,40 (depth to main deck0 x 30,50 (height of mast acorn above main deck) x 2,65 (mean light)11,59 (mean fully loaded) metres.

Swiss motor general cargo ship Alpina 1970-1985, Her Chang 1985-1992, Song San 1992-1995 and Kangson 1995-1997


IMO 7028295. Launched by Flensburger Schiffbau Gesellschaft, Flensburg, Germany for Alpina Reederei A.G., Basel, Switzerland with yard number 625 on 19 August 1970. Delivered on 20 October 1970. Managed by Alpina Transport&Affretements S.A., Antwerp, Belgium. Swiss-flagged with call sign HBLB. Unregistered on 13 November 1985 and sold. Renamed on 13 November 1985 Her Chang of the Toho Line, Panama-flagged, renamed Song San, North Korea-flagged and homeport Nampo, since 1995 Honduras-flagged and homeport San Lorenzo  and in May 1992 renamed Kangson, Vietnam-flagged and homeport Phnom Penh. Sunk after a collision on 28 February 1997. 

Gross tonnage 9.387 tons, deadweight 14.981 tons and as dimensions 139,76 z 21,11 x 12,32 metres. Machinery consisted of a 7.800hp Bremer diesel engine allowing a cruising speed of 16 miles.

Gross tonnage 153 tons and summer deadweight 47 tons. Ex-Fohr renamed March 1996. According to maritime Built by Schichau Werke,  Elblag, Poland in 1962. Gross tonnage 153 tons and simmer deadweight 47 tons. Ex-Fohr renamed March 1996 in Burkana. Geniusstrand.de reports built by Ferdinand Schichau Werft, Bremerhaven in 1962, Germany-flagged and dimensions 30,6 x 7,5 metres. Jadeweserport-cup.de calls her a harbour tug with as homeport Wilhelmshaven, Germant, built as Föhr by F. Schichau Werft, Bremerhaven and used as harbour tug until 1984. Pennant Y821. Several owners and times renamed in MS Libau, MS Narwal and MS Burkana, Since 2012 owned by MWB GmbH&Co. KG and renamed MWB Föhr). Dimensions 30,60 x 7,45 x 3,00 metres. Horsepower 1.000hp. Speed 12 knots. Bollard pull 18 tons.

Built by Trinity New Orleans, New Orleans, USA with yard number on 1 April 1968. Gross tonnage 434 ton, net tonnage 130 ton, deadweight 104 ton and as dimensions 34,55 (over all) x 10,36 x 4,54 x 5,03 (height) metres. Speed 12,0 knots. Owned by Bluedeep Investments Corporation. Panama or Saje Shipping Nigeria, Lagos, Nigeria.

Panama-flagged, call sign HP5170, registration number 724139, IMO 7320306, MMSI 357222000 and call sign HP5170. Built atb the Kremer Werft, Elmshorn, Germany with yardnumber 1157 on 1 August 1973. British cutter Swallow captured the French privateer Friend of the Country according to the Dutch newspaper Oprechte Haerlemsche courant dated 4 May 1793

An item reported that the British cutter Swallow captured the French privateer Friend of the Country of 10 guns and 28 men and her prize Liverpool captain Lidle/Litle underway from Honduras towards London, England. The Amsterdamsche courant dated 4th called the French privateer just Coentry.
