German blockaderunner Weser 1940

In a letter dated 13 April 1942 No. 1329 to the O.K.M./1 Abteilung Skl. was the so-called ‘Etappen’-organisation of the navy described. In the attachment were the blockade runners decribed used for this purpose. Ms. Weser. After unloading. Left Punta Arenas (Costa Rica) on 16 July 1940. Arrived at Manzanillo on 21 July 1940. Transfer for fuel and to be loaded.

In a letter dated 13 April 1942 No. 1329 to the O.K.M./1 Abteilung Skl. was the so-called ‘Etappen’-organisation of the navy described. In the attachment were the blockade runners decribed used for this purpose. Ms. Havelland. No cargo after she was unloaded. Departed Punta Arenas (Costa Rica) on 8 October 1939. Arrived at Manzanillo, Mexico on 19 October 1939. Transferred to be fitted out. Engine not intact.(1)

1. Call sign DIBZ. Launched by Blohm&Voss, Hamburg, Germany on 12 May 1921 as part of the Havelland-class, since 1940 lying in Japan with engine problems, repaired and became a supply cargo ship in 1942. attacked by the American submarine Gurnard (SS-254) in 1943 but servived, became a floating accommodation at Kobe, apparently renamed Tatsumi Maru in May 1945, wrecked at Kobe, Japan in September 1945, salvaged in January 1946 and broken up. Gross tonnage 6.334 tons, under deck 5.592 tons, net tonnage 3.836 tons and as dimensions 449.0 x 58.3 x 26.9 x 25 (loaded) feet. Reciprocating steam machinery with 856 nhp/4.500 ihp horsepower and a speed of 10-12 knots. Oil fuel bunker capacity 1.434 tons.

Enemy submarine activities off American Pacific coast decreasing according to the U.S. Joint Intelligence Committee. Daily summary dated 6 January 1942

An item reported that the enemy submarine activities off the American Pacific coastline decreased. One unknown submarine was on 4 January sighted in the vicinity of the mouth of the Gulf of Dulce, Costa Rica about 300 miles west of Balboa.

Laid down by Camden Shipbuilding&Marine Railway Co., Camden, Maine, USA as an ATR-1 class resccue tug on 20 January1944, launched on 18 October 1943, completed, handed over and commissioned under lendlease to the United Kingdom on 24 April 1944, renamed HMS Justice, returned to the US Navy on 20 March 1946, renamed BATR-20, stricken on 3 July 1946, sold to Leopoldo Simoncini, Buenos Aires, Argentina on 3 October 1947, laid up in 1954, beached and abandoned in 1957.

Displacement 1,360 tons amd as dimensions 50.42 x 10.21 x 4.83 metres or 165.5 x 33.6 x 15.10 feet. Triple expansion reciprocating steam propulsion, single screw, horsepower 1,600 hp and speed 12 knots. Crew numbered in naval service 32 men. In naval service armed with 1-7.62cm/3” cal 50 gun and 3-2cm guns.

Croatia-flagged, IMO 7627792. Ordered on 1 Feburary 1975. Built by Nordic Yards Warnemunde/Warnowerft GmbH, Rostock, East German in February 1977 for Jugolinija. Later Croatia Line, Costa Rica-flagged in 1999. Broken up at Alang, India in April 1999.

British HMS cruiser Cambrian cruising in the Caribbean according to the Weekly Intelligence Summary No. 20 for the week ending 20 November 1920

An item reported that the British HMS Cambrian would due Colon, Panama on 2 December, bringing the British minister, Panama and the naval attache to Port Limon, Costa Rica and continue the voyage towards Belize, Jamaica, Santiago, Port au Prince, Haiti arriving around 15 January 1921 at Bermuda.(1)

1. Of the C-class light cruisers Cambrian sub-class, preceded by Arethusa-class, succeeded by Danae-class, building ordered in September 1914, laid down by HM Dockyard Pembroke on 8 December 1914, launched on 3 March 1916, completed and commissioned in May 1916, finally decommissioned in July 1933 and sold to be broken up on 28 July 1934.

An item referred to the Proceedings dated July 1939 reporting that the USA seemed to be interested in founding naval bases at Galapagos and Cocos while ‘hiring’ from Ecuador and Costa Rica.
