Part of York-class preceded by County-class. Seven ships planned under the 1922 Washington Naval Treaty. Just HMS York and Exeter completed, the latter differs in appearance due to design modifications. Pennant 90. Ordered on 21 October 1926, laid down by Palmers Shipbuilding and Iron Company, Jarrow on 16 May 1927, launched on 17 July 1928, commissioned on 1 May 1930, attacked by Italian explosive motor boats at Suda Bay, Crete, Greece on 26 March 1941, run aground to prevent sinking, attacked by German bombers on 22 18 May 1941, main armament blown up to prevent capture, salvaged in February 1952 and scrapping started on 3 March 1952 at Bari, Italy. In original design were 3 funnels planned but the design was in 1928 modified with the foremost funnel being trunked into the second one. Bridge raised and consequently the funnels to clear the catapult on the second turret. While the catapults were too heavy for the gun turrets were catapult and derrick removed.

Romanian steamship Alba Julia returned from France according to a letter of the German naval attaché at Istanbul dated 2 March 1940

In his letter dated Istanbul, Turkey 2 March 1940 No. 801 g. reported the German naval attaché to the Oberkommando der Wehrmacht Abteilung Ausland the neutral ships passing Istanbul coming out of the Black Sea and loaded with contraband for or chartered by the enemy. An item reported on 26 February the Romanian steamship Alba Julia of the Romanian Sea service (S.M.R.). arriving coming from Marseille, France. Underway she was stopped by the British and brought to Malta where she was kept for 8 days. Unknown if shere was there unloaded.

Laid down by Ansaldo, Genoa on 29 April 1925, launched on 28 January 1927, completed on 14 November 1927 and sunk during a British aircraft of the British aircraft carrier HMS Illustrious attacking the harbour of  Benghazi, Libya on 16 September 1940.
