British screw steam gunboat HMS Dwarf stationed in Africa according to the Weekly Intelligence Summary No. 43 dated 29 October 1921


An item reported that the British screw steam gunboat HMS Dwarf (1)would visit Lagos, Nigeria between 3-9 November, Calabar, Nigeria 18-24 November, Victoria, Cameroon 25 November-9 December, Fernando Po (island off West African coast, nowadays called Bioko, Equatorial Guinea) 10-15 December returning at Lagos on 18 December.

Note

1. Bramble-1st class gunboat, preceded by Redbreast-class, laid down by London&Glasgow, Govan, Scotland on 2 December 1897, launched on 15 November 1898, commissioned on 31 august 1899, paid of around 1925 and sold to be broken up in 1926.

Portuguese sailing 4 mast fishing bank schooner Argus 1938- (later cruising ship Polynesia)


Steel built by De Haan&Oerlemans, Heusden, Netherlands for Parceria Geral Pescarias, Lisbon, in 1938 and became part of the so-called Portuguese White Fleet. Displacement 820 tons, gross tonnage 696 tons, net tonnage 413 tons and as dimensions 56,60 (between perpendiculars)-61,70 (hull)-75,40 (over all) x 10,90 x 5,40 metres. Sail area 1.323 square metres. Nowadays named Polynesia  Equatorial Guinea-flagged, homeport Malabo, owned by Bimba Limited. Since 1975 part of the Windjammer fleet at Florida, USA as chartered by Windjammer Barefoot Cruises, Miami Beach. Converted into a cruising ship including rerigging. Auxiliary 475hp Sulzer diesel engine. Still existing in 2006.

The Dutch newspaper Leeuwarder Courant dated 24 March 1909 reported that she was to be used for the cod fishery off Greenland and New Foundland. On Thursday 23 March and Friday 24th March she executed her trials on the North Sea. Launched on Saturday 10 December 1938. Rigged along side the Parkkade, Rotterdam, Netherlands in February 1939. Another Dutch newspaper Algemeen Handelsblad dated 26 March 1939 reported that she acted as a mother ship for 60 small rowboats or dorries, which left 3 times the mother ship, setting out the lines with hooks provided with new bait and returning with the catch to the Argus where the fish was cleaned. The Argus was able to stay for 6 months at sea. In the double bottom was 127 ton drinking water stored. For the auxiliary engine was 70 ton fuel oil stored.

British tug (ex-Prestwick 1955-2000) Nore Swale 2000-2009 (Belynda 2009-2011)


IMO 5284338. Dimensions 25,61-28,45 x 7,09-7,73 x 2,540-3,20 metres or 84.0-93.4 x 25.4 x 8.4-10.6 feet, deadweight 257 tons and gross tonnage 119 tons. Fitted out with 1-1.086 ahp V12 cylinder diesel and a speed of 11,5 knots. Ex-Prestwick renamed 2000 Nore Swale and owned/managed by N.E. Murray Marine Contractors, Queenborough, Kent, England, MMSI 23500588, (GBR)ON 528433 and United Kingdom-flagged. Renamed May 2009 Belynda, Equitorial Guinea-flagged and apparently of Nigerian owners was she broken up at Sines, Portugal in 2011. Built by P.K. Harris&Sons, Appledore, United Kingdom with yard number 56 in 1955. Owned by Tyne Tugs Limited/France Fenwick, Tyne&Wear Co. Ltd., Newcastle, since 1987 of Medway Port Services Limited, Chatham/London, England and in 2000 of N.E. Murray&Sons.

Russian tug (ex-Drado 1976-2009, Rado 2009-2014 ) Ureka 7 2014-

Built in 1976. Horsepower 2.500 ahp. Sold by Somagec, Casablanca, Morocco to JSC Lukoil, Moscow, Russia and renamed Meteor. As Rado Equatorial Guinea-flagged and call sign CABR. . As Meteor Russia-flagged, IMO 7514189 and call sign UBRL3. Gross tonnage 231,5 (registered)-260 tons, net tonnage 78 tons,  and as dimensions 30,71 (over all) x 9,02 x 4,45 (maximum) metres. Speed 12,0 knots. Bollard pull 35 (ahead) tons. Completed at the shipyard De Hoop, Hardinxveld, Netherlands with yard number 738 in June 1976. As the Drado Netherlands-flagged, homeport Terneuzen, Netherlands. Owned 23 December 1975 by Smit International Antilles, Willemstad, Curacao, 26 September 1983 by Smit International Middle East, Bahrain, 3 January 1988 by the Nieuwe Vlissingse Sleepdienst BV, Vlissingen, Netherlands, 22 June 1988 by Drado Smit Havensleepdiensten BV, Rotterdam and 29 July 2000 by Drado Unie van Redding&Sleepdienst BV, Terneuzen, Netherlands. Sold in 2009 and renamed Rado.
