In his letter dated Istanbul, Turkey 17 February 1940 No. 801 g. reported the German naval attaché to the Oberkommando der Wehrmacht Abteilung Ausland the neutral ships passing Istanbul coming out of the Black Sea and loaded with contraband for or chartered by the enemy. An item reported on 23 February the Romanian motor ship Basarabia of the Romanian Sea service (S.M.R.) loaded with 100 ton salted fish, seeds and general cargo underway from Constanta, Romania towards Piraeus, Greece, Haifa, Palestina and Alexandria, Egypt.

British destroyer HMS Nestor visited Ponte Delgada, São Miguel, Azores in September 1941

In his letter No. 1267 dated Lisbon 18 September 1941 reported the German naval attaché in Portugal to the Oberkommando der Kriegsmarine at Berlin referring to an Australian service the arrival of the British destroyer HMS Nestor G02 (1) at Ponte Delgada, São Miguel, Azores on 2 September. After loading 220 ton oil she departed the same day to Freetown, Sierra Leone. An Italian source called her not correctly Ebotor.

1. The British destroyer HMS Nestor G02. Part of N-class preceded by Tribal-class succeeded by L- and M-classes. Laid down by Fairfield Shipbuilding and Engineering Company Limited, Scotland in 1939, launched on 9 July 1940, commissioned on 3 February 1941 and scuttled on 16 June 1942 after being damaged in an air attack on 15 June 1942 while underway from Haifa towards Malta but the convoy changed course to Malta with the attack off Greece.

In his letter dated Istanbul, Turkey 17 February 1940 No. 758 g. reported the German naval attaché to the Oberkommando der Wehrmacht Abteilung Ausland the neutral ships passing Istanbul coming out of the Black Sea and loaded with contraband for or chartered by the enemy. An item reported on 12 February the Bulgarian cargo ship Bulgaria of the Bulgarian Steam Shipping Company of Varna, Bulgaria loaded with 800 ton grain of Varna and 60 ton salted fish and sme tobacco and hazelnuts kernels towards Haifa, Palestina and Alexandria, Egypt.

An item reported on 17 February the Romanian motor ship Transvilvania of the Romanian Sea Services with 100 salted fish and small shipments bound for Haifa, Palestina and Port Said, Egypt.

In his letter dated Istanbul, Turkey 24 February 1940 No. 774 g. reported the German naval attaché to the Oberkommando der Wehrmacht Abteilung Ausland the neutral ships passing Istanbul coming out of the Black Sea and loaded with contraband for or chartered by the enemy. An item reported on 19 February the Turkish merchant ship Platin in French time charter went to Cypern [Cyprus?] for a cargo of chrome ore from there to Marseille, France then to Haifa and Jaffa, Palestina and from there with oranges back to Marseille.

In his letter dated Istanbul, Turkey 3 February 1940 No. 712 g. reported the German naval attaché to the Oberkommando der Wehrmacht Abteilung Ausland the neutral ships passing Istanbul coming out of the Black Sea and loaded with contraband for or chartered by the enemy. An item reported on 28 January the British cargo ship Hanne loaded with 825 ton mais, 110 cattle and 16,000 live winged underway from Constanta, Romania towards Haifa, Palestina. Unarmed.

In his letter dated Istanbul, Turkey 27 January 1940 No. 690g. reported the German naval attaché to the Oberkommando der Wehrmacht Abteilung Ausland the ships passing Istanbul coming out of the Black Sea and loaded with contraband for or chartered by the enemy. An item reported on 25 January the Bulgarian steamship Tsar Ferdinand loaded with 2,200 ton wheat underway from Burgas, Bulgaria towards Haifa, Palestina.

Of the German company F. Laiesz of Hamburg, known as the Flying P-line. Built on the Clyde by A. Rodger&Co., Port Glasgow, Scotland with yard number 361 for the British Anglo-American Oil Co. Ltd. in 1902, active on the nitrate trade between Germany and Chile, interned in 1914 at Iquique, Chile, assigned to the United Kingdom in1920, handed over to the Belgian government in 1921, same year sold back to Laiesz, sold to Finland in 1931, hulked in 1936, sold to England, became a hulk at Haifa, Palestine [Israel) and broken up in 1938. 

Enemy submarine sunk off Haifa according to the U.S. Joint Intelligence Committee. Daily summary dated 8 August 1942

An item reported that an u-boat active in the Eastern Mediterranean was sunk off Haifa, British Mandatory Palestine [Israel] on 4 August and several crew members taken prisoner.
