Ordered in 1964, laid down by Yarrow Shipbuilders, Scotstoun, Scotland with yard number 2284 as the frigate annex presidential yacht Black Star for Ghana in 1965, but due to a coup order cancelled in February 1966, launched on 29 December 1966, completed in June 1968, laid up whating for a buyer, taken over by the British Navy in 1971, commissioned as HMS Mermaid F76 on 16 May 1973, sold to Malaysia in April 1977, renamed Hang Tuah, later converted into a training ship, decommissioned in 2018 and became a museumship.

Designed by Walter Blume for replacing the Heinkel He 60 biplane while the succesor He 114 was a failure. Totally 541 built between 1938-1944 and used by the German Kriegsmarine, Royal Norwegian Navy Air Service, Bulgarian and Finnish air forces and by the Soviet Border Guard until 1955. Two aircraft were active at Penang, Malaysia, which was in Japanese hands, in 1944 in Japanese livery painting with Luftwaffe pilots.

An item reported that proposals were made for a training voyage in April 1955 by the Thai frigates Tachin, Prasae and Maeklong with totally 200 cadets on board in response on the succesful visit to Thailand by four Indian frigates in 1954. The planning was Singapore-Penang, Malaysia-Colombo, Ceylon-Bombay, India-Karachi, Pakistan-Calcutta, India-Madras, India-Trincomalee, Ceylon and Rangoon, Burma.

An item reported that the British colliers Foxtonhall and Bawtry bound for Manila, Philippines were lying at the British island Laboean [Malaysia] waiting for further others.(1) The crew of the Bawtry fearing to be seized refused to depart unless the true destination was mentioned. (2)

1. The Algemeen Handelsblad dated 19 January reported that on 17 January a British steamship Bawtry was seized by the Japanese in the Tsushima Strait and brought to Sasebo. The prize court had yet nothing decided. She was underway with victuals and stores for shipbuilding from Kiau-tsjau [then the German leased Kiautschou Bay Leased Territory, nowadays Qingdao, China] to Wladiwostok.
