Launched by Rickmers shipyard, Bremerhaven, Germany in August 1896, seized by the Portuguese government at Horta, Azores in 1916, lent to the British governement to be used as transport in 1913, returned after the First World War, became school ship of the Portuguese navy, hulked depot ship 1962-1983, decommisssioned in 1975 and nowadays museum ship. Windjammer, as the Max active in the saltpeter trade in Chile. 

British bark Westward Ho underway from Chile towards Germany loaded with saltpetre stranded off the Zuidergronden, Netherlands according to the Dutch newspaper Het nieuws van den dag dated 11 January 1889

An item dated Nieuwediep, Netherlands 9th reported that in the Zuidergronden the British bark Westward Ho was stranded. She was underway from Iquique, Chile towards Hamburg, Germany loaded with saltpetre. Tugs tried to salvage her. A later idem reported that the cargo was being unloaded and finally an item dated 10th reported that she without being damaged was refloated and towed into Nieuwediep. The edition of the 12th reported that she was taken the unloaded cargo back on board with the intention to continue the voyage towards Hamburg while experts had none objections.

French ship France underway from Chile towards France loaded with saltpetre according to the Dutch newspaper Algemeen Handelsblad dated 9 February 1892

An item dated Dunkirk, France 7th reported the arrival of the 3-mast ship France coming from Iquique, Chile towards Dunkirk in 105 days loaded with 6.000 tons saltpetre.

Ship Thetis sighted off Cape Horn abandoned British ship loaded with saltpetre according to the Dutch newspaper Rotterdamsch nieuwsblad dated 5 August 1896

An item dated Nordenham, Germany 31st July reported the arrival of the ship Thetis coming from Tocopilla, Chile. She passed off Cape Horn a British 4-mast ship with cut masts and abandoned by the crew. She was loaded with saltpetre and seemed to be a almost new ship.

Cargo saltpetre of the Condor transported further by steamship Prime towards Germany according to the Dutch newspaper Rotterdamsch nieuwsblad dated 15 March 1893

An item dated Nieuwediep, Netherlands 13th reported that 5.906 bales saltpetre of the ship Condor were loaded on board of the steamship Prima bound for Hamburg, Germany. The edition dated 1 March reported that the Condor had been stranded and later was brought into Nieuwediep.

Cargo saltpetre on board of the Junin coming from Peru towards England sold to the Netherlands according to the Dutch newspaper Rotterdamsch nieuwsblad dated 24 January 1885

An item dated London, England 21st reported that the cargo saltpetre on board of the ship Adolphe captain Lege on 4 November 1884 departed from Junin, Peru towards Falmouth, England was sold towards Rotterdam, Netherlands.

German ship Arcturus burnt off Iquique, Chile according to the Dutch newspaper Rotterdamsch nieuwsblad dated 14 November 1895

An item dated Bremen, Germany referred to a telegram reporting that the German ship Arcturus captain Bonhorst loaded with 1.400 ton saltpetre lying in the roads of Iquique, Chile was lost by fire. What caused the fire was unknown. Her crew was saved.

British bark Gayton loaded with saltpetre stranded off the Pannekoek, Netherlands according to the Dutch newspaper Rotterdamsch nieuwsblad dated 19 November 1888

An item dated Nieuwediep, Netherlands 14^th reported that on the Pannekoek the British bark Gayton captain Mackay underway from Pisagua, Chile towards Hamburg, Germany loaded with saltpetre. Tugs were underway tot assist her. Later was reported that the unloading was started and already 150 ton were transported towards Nieuwediep. The Gayton however was still not refloated. An item dated 15^th reported that her crew abandoned the ship which was still not leaking but in serious problems.(1)

Ship Carpathian underway from Chile towards the Channel loaded with saltpetre sunk according to the Dutch newspaper Rotterdamsch nieuwsblad dated 20 November 1891

An item dated London, England 16th reported that the ship Carpathian underway from Iquique, Chile towards the Channel loaded with saltpetre was sunk after she caught fire. Her crew was partly salved and brought to Arica [Chile?].

British ship Lady Ruthven underway from Chile towards Germany wrecked Callantsoog, Netherlands according to the Dutch newspaper Nieuwsblad van het Noorden dated 12 November 1895

An item reported the stranding off Callantsoog, Netherlands of the British ship Lady Ruthven captain Jones underway from Iquique, Chile towards Hamburg, Germany loaded with saltpetre. Tugs were underway to assist. A later item reported that she was abandoned by her crew who were saved by fishermen and brought towards Nieuwediep, Netherlands.(1)

Dutch ship Graaf van Hogendorp coming from Chile bound for Amsterdam, Netherlands according to the Dutch newspaper Nieuwe Rotterdamsche courant dated 15 June 1854

An item reported that at Rotterdam, Netherlands was lying the Graaf van Hogendorp captain F. van Hees which earlier entered the harbour of Hellevoetsluis, Netherlands caused by her damaged rigging. She came from Valparaiso, Chile loaded with 3.197 sacks of saltpetre destined towards Amsterdam, Netherlands.

British 3-mast ship Dancow loaded with saltpetre lying at Vlissingen, Netherlands bound for Antwerp, Belgium according to the Dutch newspaper Rotterdamsch nieuwsblad dated 28 November 1888

An item dated Vlissingen, Netherlands 26th reported that the British iron-built 3-mast ship Dancow loaded with saltpetre was towed into the harbour by two French tugs. She lost her anchors in the roads of Dunkirk, France and was abandoned by her crew. Fishermen boarded her while the original crew was on board of one of the tugs. She was to be towed towards Antwerp, Belgium

Ship Kinfauns underway from Chile towards Germany loaded with saltpetre abandoned by her crew according to the Dutch newspaper Rotterdamsch nieuwsblad dated 22 January 1891

An item dated Bremerhaven, Germany 20th reported that the ship Kinfauns underway from Pisagua, Chile towards Hamburg, Germany loaded with saltpetre was embedded by the ice west off Neuwerk [tidal island in the Wadden Sea, German North Sea coast]. She was abandoned by her crew consisting of the captain, his spouse and two children and 23 sailors brought by the steamship Tell to Bremerhaven.

Ship Kenyon arrive at Falmouth, England coming from Chile loaded with saltpetre according to the Dutch newspaper Rotterdamsch nieuwsblad dated 19 July 1889

An item dated Falmouth, England 15th reported the arrival of the ship Kenyon captain Hunt loaded with saltpetre coming from Pisagua, Chile. Her cabin, rudder and steering-wheel were damaged caused by a heavy storm in the South Sea on 24 March.

British bark Riniae underway from Iquique, Chile towards Oostende, Belgium according to the Dutch newspaper Rotterdamsch nieuwsblad dated 27 November 1888

An item dated Terneuzen, Netherlands 25th reported that the British bark Riniae underway from Iquique, Chile towards Oostende, Belgium and loaded with saltpetre towed into the roads of Terneuzen the evening before after loosing anchors and chains in the roads of Vlissingen, Netherlands where she arrived after stormy weather.

Ship Earl of Hopetoun underway from Chile loaded with saltpetre towards Rotterdam, Netherlands still not arrived according to the Dutch newspaper Rotterdamsch nieuwsblad dated 1 February 1897

An item dated London, England 29th January reported that the ship Earl of Hopetoun which departed on 16 September 1896 from Iquique, Chile loaded with saltpetre towards Rotterdam, Netherlands still was not arrived. Reassurance up to 8% paid.

Ship Graf Wedel lying at Amsterdam, Netherlands coming from Chile according to the Dutch newspaper De Tijd dated 17 February 1871

An item reported the Graf Wedel captain J. Schwartz lying at Amsterdam, Netherlands loaded with 3.095 bales saltpetre coming from Iquique, Chile, shipping agents Deichmann&von Rath.

British bark Cambrian Chieftain loaded with nitrate arrived at Gent, Belgium according to the Dutch newspaper Middelburgsche Courant dated 9 March 1896

An item reported the arrival at Gent, Belgium via the canal at Terneuzen, Netherlands of the British bark Cambrian Chieftain, the largest ship until now entering the canal. To pass the locks needed she to unload 600 tons merchandise into lighters. Loaded with nitrate came she from Iquique, Chile. Dimensions 230 x 37.5 x 22.5 (at arrival at Terneuzen) feet.

British bark ship John O Gaunt for sale according to the Dutch newspaper Algemeen Handelsblad dated 30 March 1890

An announcement reported the intended sale of the well known iron built bark ship John O Gaunt with a measurement of 1.275 register tons, built at Liverpool, England in 1869 and which transported 1.828 tons of nitrate. She was a very fast ship regarded the voyage of just 79 days from Pisagua, Chile towards Qeenstown, England. At the moment she was lying at Dunkirk, France to unload her cargo. Dimensions 219.5 x 37.2 x 22.8 feet. More details could be asked at C.W. Bellock, shipbrokers at Liverpool.

British ship Micronesia loaded with cargo nitrate while burning beached at Sandown castle, England according to the Dutch newspaper Rotterdamsch nieuwsblad dated 10 June 1897

An item dated London, England 8th reported that on board of the British full rigged ship Micronesia underway with a cargo nitrate from Iquique, Chile towards Oostende, Belgium in the Channel fire broke out causing the loss of her masts. Her crew was forced to abandon the ship and were taken on board of the Belgium tug President Ludwig. Which towed the burning ship towards Sandown Castle, 1½ miles from Deal, England where she was beached. The whole day was the ship still burning. Measurement 1.619 register tons and iron-built at Liverpool, England in 1883. A later item reported that her crew was brought to Dover in the Seamen’s  House. Her captain, steersman and agents of Lloyds returned to the wreck of which the fire still was extinguished. The fore part and everything on deck seemed to be destroyed and from time to time were thick plumes of smoke visible.
