Scientific American Supplement dated 1 December 1888

Ordered by the Russian emperor Alexander III on 20 May 1888, launched at the Baltic Shipyard on 19 May 1890, commissioned in March 1891, during the First World War lying at Petrograd before she in begun June 1917 was transferred to Helsingfors {Helsinki, Finland] , laid up in reserve in 1920, converted into a floating submarine base in the early 1930s, commissioned on 20 August 1936, reconverted into a floating ship in 1954, target ship for testing anti ship missiles in 1961 and the same year sunk in the Gulf of Riga when struck by a missile. Could be broken up in early 1970s.

Laid down by Krasnoye Sormovo Shipyard, Gorky on 25 July 1965, launched on 30 March 1967, commissioned on 1 November 1967, decommissioned in September 1991 to be broken up.

Soviet battleship Marat not participating in Baltic exercises according to report No. 10295 dated 4 January 1939 of the American Military Attaché at Riga, Latvia

In his report dated Riga, Latvia 4 January 1939 No. 10295 dealing with the Soviet Baltic Fleet in the Training Season 1938 used the American Military Attaché major G.B. Guenther a so-called reliable source. The battleship Marat was lying during the whole spring in the outer dock at Kronstadt so not active.(1)

Part of the Gangut-class, preceded by Andrei Pervozvanny class, succeeded by Imperatritsa Mariya class, laid down by Baltic Works, Saint Petersburg, Russia on 16 June 1909, launched on 22 September 1911, commissioned on 5 January 1915, renamed Marat on 31 March 1921, again Petropavlovsk on 31 May 1943, Volkhov on 28 November 1950 and broken up after September 1953.

The Russian light cruiser Kirov seen completed according to report No. 10295 dated 4 January 1939 of the American Military Attaché at Riga, Latvia

The new half complete cruiser Kirov last season seen already active was for the first time seen on 12 May 1938 completed. In the winter were six long range anti aircraft guns mounted on both beams (2x3) of the af tunnel, fitted out with shields of unknown calibre. In the fore mast was fitted out with a rotating tower with 3 rangefinders, probably of 6 metres. No catapult sighted.(1)

Laid down by Mitsui Engineering&Shipbuilding, Tamano or Tama Zosensho KK, Okayama, Japan on 24 October 1935, launched on 26 January 1937, completed on 31 July 1937, surrendered at Surabaya, Dutch East Indies in August 1945, used for repatriation purposes, handed over to the Soviet Union on3 October 1947 and decommissioned on 31 October 1957.

Part of Project 949A Antey called by the NATO Oscar II preceded by the Papa- and Charlie-classes and succeeded by the Yasen-class. Totally were 20 submarines of Project 949-949A planned of which six were cancelled (four were even never laid down). A fourth-generation follow-on was planned but never realized. In 2011 was a modernisation announced under Project 949AM to realized by the Rubin Design Bureau cooperating with the Zvedocja and Zvezda shipyards. Designed for attacking NATO carrier battle groups with her 24 P-700 Granit (the SS-N-19 Shipwreck) cruise missiles. During the modernization was replacement of the Granit cruise missiles planned by 72 3M-54 Kalibr or P-800 Oniks anti-ship cruise missiles. Laid down at Sevmash on 13 July 1989, launched on 10 May 1993, commissioned on 15 December 1993, overhaul finished on 2008, part of the Pacific Fleet.

The Soviet Nikolayev Shipyard Northern 61 Kommuna 445 according to a CIA report dated September 1967

An item reported the fenced and rail served Soviet Nikolayev Shipyard Northern 61 Kommuna 445 with as geographic coordinates 46.58.30 north and 32.00.40 east located in the north part of Nikolayev, Ukraine at both sides of the Ingul used for building of the Kashin-class DLG (1) and Sibir-class refrigerated transports.(2) The shipyard possessed 3 end-launch building slipways of which two were served by overhead bridge cranes and one by 3 cranes, a foundry, 5 quays for which 3 cranes were available , 1 floating dock, 2 floating cranes, a small marine railway and 2 fabrication, 8 shop and 55 support buildings.

1. Project 61/NATO name Kashin-class were anti-aircraft guided-missile destroyers first classified as guard ships built between 1959-1973, preceded by Kanin-class succeeded by Sovremenny-class. Design approved in 1957.

Part of Ayan-class. Served between 1937-1939 in the Far East Shipping Company, during the Second World War was this transport converted into a minelayer and part of the Pacific Fleet. Part of the Pioner- class coastal diesel cargo schooners built by Odessa Works. Ayan,Serp, Molot and Gizhaga were all used as coastal minesweepers. Length 242.8 feet.
