An iten referred to tidings received from Las Palmas, Gran Canaria, Spain reporting that 4 German ships loaded with coal for the Russian squadron departed for Cameroon along the African west coast [then the German colony Kamerun] and 3 with coal loaded British steamships to the French island Réunion.

An item reported that the French minister for Colonies Mr. Sarraut (1) intended to make a voyage along the French African possessons. Around the end of September he would sail with a cruiser to Dakar visiting Senegal, French Guinea [since 1958 Guinea], French Ivory Coast, French Togoland [the French part became in 1960 the Republic of Togo nowadays Togolese Republic], French Dahomey [became in 1975 Republic of Dahomey, nowadays Republic of Benin] and the Cameroons [French part became independent in 1960, nowadays officially the Republic of Cameroon].

An item reported that the British screw steam gunboat HMS Dwarf (1)would visit Lagos, Nigeria between 3-9 November, Calabar, Nigeria 18-24 November, Victoria, Cameroon 25 November-9 December, Fernando Po (island off West African coast, nowadays called Bioko, Equatorial Guinea) 10-15 December returning at Lagos on 18 December.

As Shidaka Maru was her homeport Usuki, call sign JMAY, owner Tanaka Industries Ltd. Owner 88 Parsec, Moscow, Russia and manager Acheon Akti Navigation Company Ltd., Cyprus. Launched by by Fukuoka Zosen, Fukuoka, Japan (1105) on 4 November 1983, completed in January 1984 as the Shidaka Maru. Gross tonnage 4,878 tons, net tonnage 2,693 tons, deadweight 6,182 tons 105.01 (between perpendiculars)-115.02 (over all) x 18.01 (moulded) x 9.91 (depth moulded) x 7.781(maximum draught) metres.

Built in 1949 by the Dutch shipyard IHC Holland for Douala, Cameroon. Horsepower 400 hp and as dimensions 24,75 x 6 x 3,30 metres or 81'3" x 19'8"x 10'10".

HMS Cumberland

An item dated London 1 October reported that the British Admiralty announced the capture by the cruiser HMS Cumberland (1) of eight steamships belonging to the steam shipping line of the Woermann Linie (2)and Arnfield of the Hamburg-Amerika Linien with a total tonnage of 30,915 tons and the gunboat Soden (3) at the Cameroon-river.(4) It was expected that the scuttled floating dock and the Herzogin Elisabeth could be salvaged.

1. Cameroon was between 1884 and 1919 the German colony Kamerun and then divided into a British and a French Cameroon. Douala was captured during a British-French landing on 27 September.

French submarines serving abroad according to the Dutch magazine Marineblad dated 1939 no. 6

An item referred to the magazine M.R. dated April 1939 reporting that French submarines were also stationed abroad. In West African waters eleven, at Indochina the Espoir and the Phénix, in the West Indies the Agosta and the Ouessant, at Cameroon the Centaru and the Argo later replaced by the Pégasse and the Monge and at Djibouti the Caimand and the Souffleur.

German auxiliary cruiser SMS Möwe returned home Nieuwsblad van het Noorden dated 22 March 1917

An item dated Berlin, Germany 22nd reported that the German auxiliary cruiser Möwe (1) count Fohna Schlodin returned after several months from her second cruising on the Atlantic Ocean. She captured 22 steamships and 5 sailing vessels with a total gross tonnage of 123.000 ton, including 21 steamships of the enemy (of which 3 were armed and 5 in service of the British Admiralty) and 4 sailing vessels of the enemy. She came back with 593 prisoners.

German gunboat SMS Panther 1900-1931

Of the Iltis-class consisting of the Iltis, Panther, Jaguar, Luchs, Tiger and Eber. Laid down at the Kaiserliche Werft, Danzig, Germany in 1900, launched on 1 April 1901, commissioned on 15 March 1902, forced the crew of the mutinous Haitian warship Crête-a-Pierrot to blew up their ship during the fight, involved in the Agadir Crisis or Second Moroccan Crisis in 1911, decommissioned on 31 March 1931 and sold to be broken up. Dimensions 64,1 (waterline)-66,9 (over all) x 9,7 x 3,54 (fore) or 210.4-219.6 x 31.10 x 11,6 feet and a displacement of 1.193 metric tons. The machinery consisted of a set vertical triple expansion engines with 4 coal fuelled Thorny croft boilers delivering 1.344 ihp driving two screws resulting in a maximum speed of 13,7 miles and with a speed of 9 knots a range of 3.400 nautical miles. Her crew numbered 130 men. The armament consisted of 2-10,5cm/4” L/40 quick firing guns and 6-3,7cm/1.5” cannons.

In the First Moroccan Crisis or Tangier Crisis March 1905-May 1906 dealing with the status Morocco, with Germany supporting the sovereignty of the Moroccan sultan Abdelaziz against France and United Kingdom. In the Agadir-Crisis in April 1911 were France, England and Spain opponents of Germany ending in the Treaty of Fez on 30 March 1912. Morocco became a full protectorate of France and Germany receiving a part of French Equatorial African colony of Middle Congo which as Neukamerun became apart of the German colony Kamerun with an outlet to the Congo River.
