Japanese screw steam cargo ship Akagane Maru 1940-1943

Gross register tonnage 3.121 tons and as dimensions 96,9 x 13,7 x 7,3 metres. Built by Harima Shipbuilding and Engineering Co. Ltd, Harima, Japan for Nippon Kaiun K.K., Tokyo, Japan in 1940. Requisitioned by the Imperial Japanese Navy in 1942 used for transporting ammunition, troops etc. destroyed by the American heavy cruiser USS Indianapolis CCA-35) north west of Attu on 20 February 1943.(1)

1. Of the Portland-class, preceded by Northampton-class and succeeded by New Orleans-class. Building ordered on 13 February 1929, contract awarded on 15 August 1929, laid down by New York Shipbuilding Corporation, Camden, New Jersey, USA on 31 March 1930, launched on 7 November 1931, commisioned on 15 November 1932 and torpedoed and sunk by the Japanese submarine I-58 on 30 July 1945 underway from Guam towards Leyte, Philippines.
