American destroyer escort USS Stern (DE-187) 1943-1951 and Dutch frigate Hr.Ms. Van Zijll (F811) 1951-1968

 

Part of the Cannon-class destroyer escorts, preceded by Buckley-class, succeeded by Edsall-class. Laid down by Federal Shipbuilding&Dry Dock Co., Port Newark, USA on 12 August 1943, launched on 31 October 1943, commissioned in the US Navy as USS Stern (DE-187) on 1 December 1943, part of the Reserve fleet since 26 April 1946, prepared for transfer on 1 March 1951, stricken from the Naval List on 7 March 1951, commissioned in the Royal Netherlands Navy as Hr.Ms. Van Zijll (F811) on 3 May 1951, decommissioned on 1 October 1963, part of the reserve towed on 2 November 1966 towards Vlissingen, Netherlands to be used as accommodation ship, towed to Den Helder, Netherlands on 9 September 1967, stricken on 24 October 1967 and sold in February 1968 to be broken up by Simon’s Scheepssloperij Fijenoord, Rotterdam, Netherlands.

Displacement  1.250 tons and as dimensions 93.30 x 11.20 x 3.30 metres. With a diesel electric propulsion, 6.000 ahp horsepower and 2 screws was her speed 19 miles. Her crew numbered 209 men. Armament consisted of 3-7.6cm guns, 3x2-4cm machine guns and 9x2-2cm machine guns.
