An item reported that a Japanese submarine sunk the U.S.A.T. Royal T. Frank on 30 miles north of Hawaii.(1)

1. US Army transport, laid down in 1907, launched by New York Shipbuilding Co., Camden, New Jersey, USA as a mine planter on 20 October, torpedoed and sunk by the Japanese submarine I-71 while crossing the Alenuihaha Channel between Maui and Hawaii on 28 January 1942. Commissioned as USAMP Gen. Royal T. Frank on 3 June 1909.
