According to a letter dated 7 November 1807 , written off Nassau , New Providence , by Jer. Cogilan, commanding officer of the Elk, he captured the Posta de Caraccas with a letter of marque 19 October after a long chase. She was from Campeachy [Mexico?] bound towards Havana, Cuba with a cargo of leather, bass rope and 24.000 dollars, was just armed with one gun, which was together with the mail thrown over board. This must be the brig-sloop Elk, armed with 18 guns of the Cruizer-class, 382 tons builders measurement, launched at Barnard, Deptford , England 22 August 1804 and which was broken up in October 1812.
