An item reported that the Taiyo Maru (1) torpedoed and sunk on 8 May off Nagasaki, Japan had a large number of technicians embarked underway to the captured areas and to exploit those. The estimated losses were nearly 2.000 men.

Laid down as Cap Finisterre for the Hamburg-South America Line by Blohm&Voss, Hamburg, Germany with yard number 208 in 1910, launched on 8 August 1911, completed on 18 November 1911, seized by Allies on 4 April 1919, became US property as USS Cap Finisterre on 11 April 1919, out of service on 25 November 1919, became as Taiyo Maru property of the Japanese merchant shipping company Nippon Yusen (Nyk),early May 1942 requisitioned by the Japanese Imperial Army to be used as an auxiliary transport and sunk by the American submarine USS Grenadier on 8 May. Of the soldiers, crew and passengers on board 817 men lost their lives. The passengers included a lot of technicians bound for the former Dutch East Indies, Sarawak , Philippines and Malaya. She departed on 7 May for Singapore. The Grenadier was laid down by the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, Kittery, Maine, USA on 2 April 1940, launched on 29 November 1940, commissioned on 1 May 1941 and scuttled off Phuket, Thailand on 22 April 1943 while she was damaged during a Japanese air attack. Of the Tambor-class diesel-electric submarines, preceded by Sargo-class and succeeded by Mackerel-class.
