The Italian naval shipbuilding program according to the Dutch newspaper Het Nieuws van de Dag voor Nederlandsch-Indië dated 20 June 1905

The Italian minister of navy Mirabello (1) proposed recently the Parliament to approve the budget of 132.000.000 lire. The ministerial press and the shipbuilding yards reacted very enthusiastic. The budget was necessary to lay down 3 armoured cruisers of each 10,000 tons, 10 destroyers, 7 submarines and 15 high seas torpedo boats each of 215 tons. In 1905-1906 was the effective strength of the Italian navy to consist of 15 cruisers of the modern type (meaning armoured?), 1 armoured blockade vessel (a new kind of warship), 12 cruisers of the modern type, 14 armoured cruisers of the old type, 6 small cruisers of the old type, 2 vessels with an armoured bow, 27 destroyers with a speed of 30 knots, 12 submarines, one Holland type submarine, 42 high seas torpedo boats each of 215 tons, 7 torpedo boats 1st class each of 110 tons and 40 torpedo boats 2nd class each of 80 tons. A telegram dated Rome 19 June reported that the Italian parliament accepted the proposal of the cabinet to strengthen the navy.

1. This must be admiral Carlo Mirabello (Tortona 1847-Milan 1910), 1903-1909 minister of navy mainly responsible for creating the Italian major battle fleet.
