The navy of the German Democratic Republic according to the Dutch newspaper Nieuwsblad van het Noorden dated 15 February 1961

An item reported that the German Democratic Republic was busy with founding an own submarine fleet. At that moment consisted her navy of 4 destroyers, 5 large patrol boats, 22 minelayers, 14 gunboats and 40 smaller patrol boats. The navy purchased some small submarines to train sailors who were later to be used as instructors for the new submarines and their crews.
