Egyptian patrol vessel-sloop El Amir Faroucq 1926-1948



Launched on 11 June 1926 by Hawthorn Leslie (Shipbuilders( Limited, Hebburnwith yard number 543, completed in August of the same year and sunk during an attack of Israeli MTM (self-destroying) boats on 22 October 1948 off Gaze. These boats were purchased in Italy manned by Israeli divers belonging to the Palmach Palyam units. The Dutch newspapers De Heerenveensche koerier and De Waarheid dated 28 October 1948 confirmed her loss although calling her Koning Faroek more or less translating her real name into Dutch.

With a gross tonnage of 947 tons, net register tonnage of 319 tons, displacement 1.441 (standard) tons and as dimensions 247,1 x 34,1 x 18.1 feet or 75,3 x 10,4 x 4.04 metres. The two oil fuel 3-cylinder triple expansion engines supplied 2.000 ihp/377 nhp while driving two screw allowed a speed of 17-18 knots. Her crew numbered 70 men and the armament consisted of 1x5,7cm gun and 4x1-7,7 cm guns. Steel-built. Apparently original designed as a passenger cargo ship. Since August 1936 in service by the Coast Guard&Fisheries Administration, Alexandria.
