German torpedo boat S 41 lost according to the Dutch newspaper Algemeen Handelsblad dated 1 September 1895

An item reported that the loss of the German torpedo boat S 41 caused a lot of stress. It was believed that kind of vessels should have no problems with storms in the North Sea and Baltic. Not earlier was such a vessel lost due to winds and waves, just by collisions. All men below deck were killed. The opening to go below was such small that only one men at the same time could passed it and no one was able to fight against the force of incoming water. Probably exploded the boiler in the engine room caused by the sudden cooling by the sea water. The edition of the 3rd reported that the cause of the disaster still was not known. Some experts suggested a human error during the steering. Until now was believed that the German boats were such stable and seaworthy that even in extreme bad weather they could perform a voyage.
