Soviets refitting former Italian cruiser Duca d’Aosta at Nikolayev, Ukraine to a CIA report dated 7 April 1951

An item reported that the former Italian cruiser Duca d’Aosta (1) in mid-March 1951 was lying in the harbour of Nikolayev, Ukraine in the early stages of her refitting. She was painted with read lead and just some labourers on board visible. Her anti torpedo boat and anti-aircraft armament was in the meantime removed. It was expected that it would take at least another year before she was ready.

1. The light cruiser Emanuele Filiberto Duca d’Aosta of the Condottieri-class, laid down in 29 October 1932, launched on 22 April 1934, commissioned on 13 July 1935, ceded as war reparation to the Soviet Union as the Z 15in March 1949 later renamed Stalingrad and then Kerch and commissioned in the Black Sea Fleet, stricken on 20 February 1959 and broken up in the 1960s.
