Dutch merchantship Baloeran of the Rotterdamsche Lloyd in 1935

The photo below was published in the edition of the former Dutch magazine Gelderland in woord en beeld dated 9 August 1935 while she was sighted by children coming from Rotterdam standing on the beach at Hoek van Holland.

The Baloeran was ordered in May 1928 at the yard Wilton Fijenoord NV at Rotterdam, Netherlands, her sister ship Dempo was built at Flushing. She was completed 8 March 1930. When the second World War broke out she wasn't able to escape and the German navy ordered 10 May 1941 that she was to be rebuilt as a hospital ship. As the Strassburg she was completed 20 July 1941 and taken into service 31 July between Germany, Norway and the Baltic. She hit a mine 1 September 1943 off Egmond aan Zee, Netherlands and was finally torpedoed by British MTB's and MGB's 19 September while the RAR attacked her in October again.
