Japanese invaded the Phoenix Islands according to the U.S. Joint Intelligence Committee. Daily summary dated 3 January 1942

An item reported that the Japanese invaded the Phoenix Islands presumably Canton Island (position 3.00 south 171.40 north). This could however not be confirmed.

Japanese forces apparently active at Howland Island according to the U.S. Joint Intelligence Committee. Daily summary dated 4 January 1942

An item reported that the reported Japanese activities at Canton Island were not correct but probably was Howland Island about 425 miles north west of Canton Island and 760 miles east of the Japanese base at Makin, Gilberts meant.

Enemy submarines active on the Pacific according to the U.S. Joint Intelligence Committee. Daily summary dated 26 January 1942

An item reported that enemy submarines were attacked without success near Midway, Canton Islands and a location around 325 miles south east of Oahu, Hawaii. There seemed to be nine enemy submarines on the Pacific of which probably three in the Yokosuka area.
