The inspection of the Dutch East Indiaman Popkensburg at Batavia, Dutch East Indies on 12 April 1734

According to orders from the Netherlands dated 24 February 1730 were the East Indiamen at Batavia thoroughly inspected concerning their condition. Each ship was inspected by a team consisting of the master carpenter and the first and second fore men of the ship carpenters accompanied by the master, the first and the second mate and the ship carpenter of the ship. They reported what the exact condition was and what necessary would be repaired.

Of the chamber Zeeland. Departed Rammekens 20 May 1733, master was Jakob Jongerhelt, stayed at Cape of Good Hope between 25 October-6 December 1733 and arrived at Batavia 13 March 1734. At her departure her crew consisted of 150 sailors, 74 soldiers, 2 craftsmen and 4 passengers, totally 150 men. At her arrival her crew numbered 111 sailors, 33 soldiers, 4 craftsmen and 5 passengers. She was set on stocks by Hendrik Raas at E.I.C-yard at Middelburg, 1 May 1732 and launched 16 January 1733. Her dimensions were 145 x 38¾ x 15¼, 350 last (according to Bruijn 850 metric tons).

The inspection found place while she was lying unloaded off Batavia and dated 12 April 1734. Due being brand new and well built there were no repairs needed. She just had to be caulked in- and outwards and further 'branden en smeren' (to be burnt off and smeared). Presence were master carpenter Pieter Andriesz Blom, thee first foreman Cornelis van der Wint and second foreman Jacobus van Overbeek of the ship carpenters accompanied by the master Jacob Jongerheld, the first mate Christiaan Danielsz, the second mate Cornelis Stevensz and the ship carpenter of the ship Hendrik Seijpensz.
