The Dutch navy commanded by Tromp defeated the Spanish fleet commanded by Oquendo off Downs in 1639. The Dutch captured several ships, which mostly were too large to service in the Dutch coastal waters. A pamphlet, in possession of the Royal Library at The Hague, some of the prizes is mentioned. Documents in Dutch archives give a lot more information. In the coming weeks I will translate some of the latter information.
Pamphlet no. 4624 is titled "Naerder Bericht van de Groote See-Victorie/Bevochten door den manhaftigen ende seer Couragieusen heldt/den heer Admiral Maerten Harpers Tromp etc.", published at Leiden 1639. According to this pamphlet 17 ships were burnt or beached and 7 galleons and 9 large royal ships were captured. Of those 5 galleons and 5 large royal ships were brought to Zealand, the remaining to Rotterdam. This information is not correct, because at last two ships were sold at Amsterdam.
The ships captured were
The admiral Don Antonio d'Ocquendo, from the Spanish Crown, 68 guns
The admiral of Naples, Don Lowijs, 66 guns
The admiral of Portugal, Don Philippo, 54 guns
St. Ian Baptiste, 54 guns
St. Catarina, 54 guns
The 't Wapen van Castilien, 54 guns
The 't Wapen van Aragon, 48 guns
The St. Maria, 44 guns
The Thetys, 36 guns
The Liefde, 34 guns
At least one ship is in this list missing namely the El Gran Alejandro
