British destroyer HMS Newcastle D 87 1973-2005 (2008)


A Type 42 destroyer laid down on 21 February 1973 at the yard of Swan Hunter, launched on 24 April 1975m commissioned on 23 March 1978, decommissioned on 1 February 2005 and in 2008 departed towards Turkey to be broken up.

With a displacement of 4,820 tonnes were her dimensions125 x 14,3 x 5,8 metres or 410’ x 47’x 19’. The engines provided 36MW allowing a speed of 30 knots. The personnel strength varied between the 287-312 men. The armament consisted of 2 Sea Dart Surface-to-air missile launchers, 1-4.5” gun, 2-20mm guns, 2xPhalanx Close-in weapon system, 2x3 torpedo tubes for anti submarine warfare, NATO Seagnat and DLF3 decoy launchers and she carried with her a Lynx HMA8 helicopter.
