Yugoslavian submarine depot ship Hvar (1925-1953)


Launched on 29 February 1896 at the yard of Sir James Laing&Sons Ltd, Sunderland with building number 546 as the Umtali for account of Bullard, King&Co. at London and was in March of the same year completed. She was hired by the British Admiralty on 3 January 1915 to be used as a store carrier (pennant number Y9.27). On 17 April of the next year she was handed over to her owners. In 1925 was she sold to Yugoslavia where she was renamed as Solun, in 1927 Vintali, in 1928 Hvar, 1941 Quarmerolo, in 1945 she retained her old name Hvar but was six years later again renamed as Momar and was finally broken up in 1953 at Split. With a displacement of 3,600 tons was her speed 12 knots. According to the last website were her dimensions 97.8 (between perpendiculars) x 12.6 metres? and has she a DWT of 1,525 tons. Owned by Dubrovacka parobrosdka Plovidba atmopoloiiki at Dubrovnik. Jane’s edition 1944/1945 confirmed her rebuilding in 1927 and a displacement of 3,600 tons with as dimensions 318¼’x 39’x 13. Her triple expansion engines provided 1,100 hp allowing a speed of 12 knots saying that she was recovered from the Italian forces in good condition which renamed her Quarnarelo.
