British paddle steam frigate HMS Gorgon 1834-1864


Teak built while using oak for the main beams. Ordered to be build at the Pembroke Royal Dockyard on 10 July 1834, laid down in July  two years later, launched on 31 August 1837, commissioned on 30 August a year later, decommissioned on 11 February 1864,towed to Greenhithe on 6 May to be used as a receiving hulk for the sick crewmembers of the HMS Osborne, afterward dismantled at Woolwich and finally sold to Charlton be broken up on 17 October that same year.

With a displacement of 1,610 long tons/1,640 tons and a builders measurement of 1108 67/94 tons burden were her dimensions 152’2’(keel)-235 (over all) x 37’6”x 16’ and with a hold of 23’ or 46,4-71,6 x 11,4 x 4,9 and 7,0 metres. The two cylinder direct acting steam engine and the 4 boilers supplied 800 ihp and while driving paddles with a diameter of 27’ (=8,2 metres) allowing a speed of 9,5 knots. She was originally schooner rigger which later was changed into a brig rigging. Her crew numbered 160 men. The original armament consisted of 2-10 guns, 2-68pdr guns and 2-42pdr carronades and after 1856 1-10”gun, 1-68 pdr gun and 4-32pdr guns.
