Commonwealth naval bases in the Far East according to the Dutch newspaper Schiedamsche Courant dated 9 February 1921

The correspondent of the newspaper Daily Telegraph at Sydney reported that admiral Grant representing Australia in the Navy Council was underway to Singapore to be present at the important conference of officers of the British squadrons in the Indian, Chinese, Australian, Canadian, South African and New Zealand waters to discuss topics dealing with the defence of the Pacific. One topic was the founding of a naval base. Some naval authorities suggested the Salomon islands, others proposed Rabaul, Port Darwin and other Australian harbours. The results of the conference were be made public during the coming Commonwealth conference.
