Venetian naval preparations according to the Dutch newspaper Groninger Courant dated 15 February 1788

According to a tiding dated Venice 26 January was the Senate deeply concerned about what was going on in the eastern parts of Europe (1) and decided to prepare the navy for an eventual forced involvement in the war. The Venetian navy consisted at that moment of 80 ships, frigates, chebecqs and galleys with a total armament of 1,452 guns. In times of war were 26 ships of the line available of which continuous 14 or 15 ships were ready for immediately service. If necessary was a number of 30,000 sailors available in the provinces.

Note
1. I suppose it’s the Russo-Turkish war between 1787-1792 which caused these preparations and not the Russo-Swedish war between 1788 and 1790.
