The French naval base at Cherbourg according to the Dutch newspaper Provinciale Overijsselsche en Zwolsche Courant dated 30 July 1858
The French newspaper Moniteur supplied some details dealing with the new basin at Cherbourg. The aft basis was with the fore basin connected through a lock with a length of 100 metres and with the larger dock with a lock of similar size allowing a ship of the line coming from sea without delay passing the first basins to anchor in the 3rd one. The capacity was around 1.600,000 M3 and able to supply space for14 ships of the line. The three basins forming the harbour ordered to be built on 15 April 1809 supplied space for around 38 ships of the line. With the strengthened part of the roads added to this number was the naval establishment of Cherbourg capable for supplying space for 80 ships of the line. Total costs since the start of the building (1803) was estimated to be 170.000.00 Dutch guilders (?).
