Tidings from London reported that the Chilean navy again bombarded the town Iquique, the damage however was just slightly.(1) The Peruvian ironclad Huascar captured a Chilean transport and three Chilean loaded merchant ships. The edition of the next day reported that the transport had a complete cavalry regiment on board and pointed out that the Huascar caused more damage as the whole Chilean fleet which was much larger as her opponent.
The newspaper Zierikzeesche Courant dated 29 January 1881 reported that Chile demanded the transfer of the transport Rimac.
Note
1. This happened in the War of the Pacific fought by Chile against Bolivia and Peru and was caused by a disagreement between the first town countries about the ownership of a part of the Atacama Desert. Between Chile and Peru was the peace treaty signed on 20 October 1883. Between Chile and Bolivia was a peace treaty not earlier officially signed as on 20 October 1904 although there was since 1884 an armistice. The armoured turret ship Huascar was captured by Chile on 8 October 1879 and nowadays a museum ship.
