Japan seized Russian ships for spying according to the Dutch newspaper Algemeen Handelsblad dated 5 July 1933

An item dated Toky 4 July reported that the Japanese minister of foreign affairs Oesjieda spoke with the Russian ambassador who handed over an official protest against the seizure of two Russian steamships suspected of spying. The Russian ambassador demanded the release of the ships which was refused by the Japanese cabinet which stated that the Russian sailors were to appear for the court. The relations between both countries was not improved by this matter.
