Worse living conditions on board of British troop transports according to the Dutch newspaper Goessche Courant dated 7 April 1900

An item reported described the worse living conditions on board of the British troop transport. Partly of the troops was fitted out with shoes with soles made of paper. On board of one of the transports lost soldiers heels and soles after a few days while have been walking over wet decks. Large quantities of rotten canned meat were thrown over board unsuitable for consumption.
