Launched at the British shipyard of Armstrong, Elswick on 26 May 1892 and stricken around 1920. With a displacement of 1.300 tons were her dimensions 64,01 (between perpendiculars) x 10,67 x 3,89 metres or 210’ x 35’ x 12’9”. The engines and boilers supplied 2.600 (normal draught)-3.800 ihp allowing a speed of 16 (normal draught)-17.4 knots and she had a coal bunker capacity of 100-170 tons. With a crew of 160 men was she armed with 6x1-4.7” guns, 4x1-6pd guns and 3x1-14” torpedo tubes. Her armour consisted of a sloping deck to the ends of 1-2” thickness. Later renamed Quinze de Novembre but retained her original name in 1894 and was then converted into a minelayer. Other sources claimed that she was converted in 1898 as the Quinze de Novembre.
The Dutch magazine
Marineblad dated 1892-1893 no. 10 referred to the magazine Engineering reporting that the Brazilian cruiser Republica built at Elswick. Displacement 1.300 ton. Her engines of Hawthorn, Leslie&Co. developed with artificial draught 3.400 ihp achieving a medium speed of 17,4 miles on 20 November. The armament consisted of 6-4,7cm quick firing guns using cordite. The guns were the same day successfully tested.
