Steam tanker Excelsior instead of entering Flushing sent to Germany according to the Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf dated 20 May 1897

An item dated Rotterdam the 19th reported that the steam tanker Excelsior (1) underway from New York towards Flushing past on the 18th Wight and was ordered to go to Hamburg and Altona.

1. The German steam tanker Excelsior launched on April 1894 at the shipyard AG Vulkan, Stettin-Bredow with yard number 214 for the Deutsch-Amerikanische Petroleum Gesellschaft, Hamburg, Germany? Sold on 2 November 1915 to the Standard Oil Co. of New York and a year later renamed Petrolite. On 10 June 1917 torpedoed by the German submarine U35 or the U39 and sunk.
