An item reported that the departure of the French transport la Gironde again was delayed. Earlier was her departure of 15 December with a battalion infantry to China delayed. The reason was not given although there seemed to be a discussion going on at Hong Kong how to act against China. The British wanted to act immediately against Canton while France seemed to wait for an official declaration of war.
The edition dated 17 July 1858 referred to a tiding from China dated 29 April reporting that she arrived with 900 men of the infantry on board.
