In
a telegraphic message from Brest
dated 1 September was the departure of the frigate la Néreïde, the corvette la
Créole and the brig le Cuirassier departed that day. Rear-admiral Baudin who
was appointed as commanding officer of the French navy off the Mexican coast,
hosted his flag on board of the frigate. The corvette was commanded by the king’s youngest
son the prince de Joinville. The 3 ships were first destined towards Cadiz to join the
frigates la Gloire and la Medée and from there straight forwards to the Mexican
coast. The ship of the line l’Hercule left 1 September
Brest towards Toulon.
