Naval operations of the Dutch East Company at the West Coast of Sumatra according to the Generale Missive dated 28 November 1737

With the brigantine Rotte arrived at Batavia with a cargo consisting of 769 tael gold, 62 lb camphor and 11.997 lb benzoë. The Rotte and the Boot transported stores valued fl. 143.995 towards the West Coast of Sumatra. Lieutenant Welters commanded an expedition against Jang Dipertuang in Surcam. The pantjalang Baros, a jalloor commanded by the so-called mardijker Jan Arendsz and 2 two smaller vessels were sent up the river, followed by troops on land. The ships hardly went up the river when they were shot by 6 gorappen and 1 jalloor and forced to retreat when lacking ammunition and powder and with 7 wounded. The Baros was strengthened with 6-3pdrs from the Rotte, which guarded the entrance of the river. When the Dutch attacked again, they found that the enemy had fled and burnt her vessels except for 3 kacaps loaded with bensuin and one jalloor. For patrolling in the north and off Natal was except for the already available 7 ships an extra tandjongpoura added.
