The Egyptian, Greek and Turkish navies in the Levant according to the Nederlandsche Staatscourant dated 4 October 1825
Napoli-di-Romania, 1 September. The Greek fleet still blockaded the Gulf of Lepante but left when the Turkish ships without any one could understand the reason. The disgrace of the Turkish was obvious. Despite the possession of beautiful and well fitted out fleets they fled every time even for Greek merchant ships. When the Greeks heard that the Porte fitted out a fleet which was to join an Egyptian squadron loaded with troops and ammunition for a landing at Morea, the Greeks split their fleet in two divisions, one to watch the Turkish fleet and the other to prevent the passage of the Egyptians. The last division succeeded after several ‘meetings’ to force the Egyptian squadron of Mehemed Ali to flee to Suda. The other division attacked the Turkish fleet which also arrived at Suda suffering severely. Next thing was that the Greeks blockaded this harbour. When they left the pasha departed for sea but engaged a Greek flotilla in the waters of Cerigo and the Turkish lost again the battle. At Navarino were 4.000 Albanian soldiers by the Turkish fleet landed. When the Turkish fleet was separated some of their ships reached Missolunghi. When the Captain Pasha begun to shoot at this city tidings came of the arrival of the Greek fleet and the captain Pasha immediately departed, leaving some sloops behind which at the end also fled.
