The British Royal Navy consisted on 1 January of 131 ships of the line (54 of 80-120 guns, 77 of 74-78 guns), 149 frigates (37 of 50-60 guns, 112 of 42-48 guns), 172 corvettes (49 of 24-28 guns, 123 of 10-22 guns) and 158 brigs. Totally 610 ships of which were fitted out and in actual service 179 ships, divided over the Mediterranean 30, West Indies 23, South America 13, African coasts 6, British harbours 63 and so on. Unrigged were 327 ships and 104 still on stocks. There were 48 admirals, 65 vice-admirals, 69 rear admirals, 25 pensioned admirals, 847 captains, 17 pensioned captains, 996 commodores, 100 pensioned commodores, 8,629 lieutenants and 30,000 sailors. The Admiralty Board responsible for the navy instead of the Duke of Clarence consisted of the lords Melville and Brenock and the vice-admirals Cockburn, Nothan and Clerk.
