An item referred to a letter written by captain Smith on 5 November 1871 on board of the bark Nautilus (1) of New Bedford lying at St. Helena reported that Center captain of the brig Heman Smith of Boston broke his arm caused by falling from his day some days earlier. His mate replaced him during a small trip around the island. The Nautilus intended to depart a day later towards the Arctic. Her first mate was in the meantime replace by second mate Brightman.
