Crew of Dutch frigate Zr.Ms. Rotterdam serving in the Dutch East Indies in worse condition according to the Dutch newspaper Weekblad van Den Helder en het Nieuwediep dated 1 May 1843

An item dated Den Helder, Netherlands 29 April referred to a private letter written on board of the Dutch corvette Zr.Ms. Argo (1) lying at Banjoewangie, Dutch East Indies reporting the death of colone; Funing on board of the Zr.Ms. Rotterdam.(2)  Within one year died on board of the Rotterdam colonel Funing, lieutenant colonel Fehrman and the lieutenants Bothling, Brunsveld, Van Hulten and J. van der Hart. Commanding officer of the Rotterdam was at that moment Willink. The all over condition of the crews when sailing with the Rotterdam in July 1842 towards Padang was worse, leaving 157 men behind in the hospital at Batavia, Dutch East Indies.

1. Laid down at the navy yard of Amsterdam in 1833, launched on 12 April 1838, becoming in 1851 a target. Displacement 900 tons and an armament of 32 guns.
2. Frigate 2nd class, on stocks at Rotterdam, Netherlands December 1821 by P. Glavimans, launched on 8 June 1826, razed as 38 guns frigate 1838, stricken 1862, dimensions 163 (on waterline) x 42 x 22,7 feet, 38-44 guns.
