Second World War German midget submarine Biber

Vlissingen, Netherlands 15 July 2014

Dimensions 8,85 x 1,57 x 1,42 (height) metres/ Fitted out with a petrol and an electric engine allowing a speed of 5,3 (submerged)-6,5 (surfaced) knots. The range was maximum 100 nautical miles while surfaced and the diving depth 20 metres. Originally designed for attacking coastal shipping and for this purpose armed with 2-21”/53cm torpedoes. In haste designed during when a Allied invasion of Europe became more and more a reality. The result were technical shortcomings and further more were the men who manned these subs not well trained.

This Biber was in 1950 off the coast of Vlissingen salvaged with still the body of her steersman in her. She is now prepared for a new exhibition.
