Dutch submarine (Luctor et Emergo) Hr.Ms. O1 1904-1920



Design of the Electric Boat Company, USA. Single hull. Supervisor during the building on behalf of the E.B.C. was M..F. Hay. Administration begun on 30 April 1904, laid down on 1 June 1904, in the thrushes in September 1904, plating fitted in February 1905, launched on 8 July 1905, docked between 19-21 September 1905, 25-31 October 1905 and on 18 April 1906 and 18 June 1906. Technical trials on/between 13, 17, 27 November 1905 and  8-22 December 1915, official trial on 1 August 1906, delivery on 20 December 1906, commissioned on 21 December 1906, decommissioned in 1920 and afterwards broken up. Costs ƒ 430.000,00 (contracted), ƒ 378.237,58 (expenses and ƒ 64.752,42 (profit).

Dimensions 20,421 (over all) x 3,581 x 3,891 metres, displacement 105,3 (surfaced)-124,5 (submerged) tons.. Crew numbered 10 men. Armament consisted of 1-45cm bow torpedo tubes and 3 torpedoes. The gasoline OTTO engine was under a contract between De Schelde-Royal Netherlands Navy dated 7 August 1912 replaced by a fuel oil 2 stroke 4 cylinder 200 shp MAN engine replaced. Speed 8,35 (surfaced)-7 (submerged) knots. Diving test depth 30 metres off Borssele, Netherlands on 29 August 1906. Her first diving test was near the so-called Tonnebrug in the Dokhaven on 29 September 1905, followed by tests on the roads on 4 September 1905 and in the harbour on 24 April 1906. Her conning tower was preserved.


First submarine of the Royal Netherlands Navy and with her commissioning on 21 December 1903 was the submarine service of the Royal Netherlands Navy a fact.

The Dutch naval Lieutenant Paul Koster, photo published in te Dutch magazine De Prins dated 29 September 1906, played an important part in getting her working together with the engineer Marley Fotheringham Hay.
