Dutch gunboat Hr. Ms. Johan Maurits van Nassau 1930-1940

Salvaged gunturret now placed in the garden of the Royal Institute for naval officers (KIM) at Den Helder, Netherlands, 12 September 2015




To be built as a flotilla vessel to serve in the Dutch West Indies (Surinam and Netherlands Antilles).

Bid done on 8 December 1930, building ordered on 19 December 1930, contract signed on 24/31 December 1930, buidling administration started on 3 June 1931, to be delivered before or on 30 June 1932,  laid down at the shipyard of the Kon. Mij. De Schelde, Vlissingen, Netherlands with yardnumber 195 on the south slip on 13 July 1931, in the thrushes on 22 February 1932, first armour plating fitted 22 April 1932, first boiler placed on 7 July 1932, launched by Mrs. Va.d. Stad-Meijer, on 20 August 1932, trials while berthed 18 and 20 January 1933, docked 25-28 January 1933, technical trial 6-10 Februry 1933, official trial on 9 February 1933, commissioned on 5 April 1933 and sunk on 14 May 1940 of Callantsoog, Netherlands during a German aircraft attack when she was underway towards England. When the Second World War broke out she was lying in the roads of Vlissingen, Netherlands and succeeded on 10 May in destroying a German plane which was lying mines near Vlissingen. On 14 May she successfully participated in defending the Afsluitdijk against German troops underway towards the naval base Den Helder, Netherlands. Apparently a improved design of the gunboats Flores and Soemba.

Building costs ƒ 2.380.040,00 when first commissioned. Hull with engines ƒ 1.257.687, armament and fundation ƒ 582.298,00.

Dimensions 76,00 (between perpendiculars)-78,65 (over all) x 11,60 x 3,75 x 6,45 (hold below maindeck) or 249'4"-245.9½"x 38'0 3/4" x 12'4"x 21'2". Displacement 982 (when launched and a draught of 1,85-3.060 metres)-1.537 (Wagington)-1.750 with a draught of 3,75 metres. Built under supervision of navy engineer G. de Rooy. Contracted speed 15 knots. Two-3 bladed screws. Two 1.050 ahp at 165rpm engines. Four Schelde Yarrow waterpipe boilers. Her crew numbered 127 men. The armament consisted of 3-15cm guns and 8 machineguns.
