The order for the coastal
defence submarines No. 62-77 with a submerged displacement of around 700 tons
was given to the Electric Boat Company (8), the navy yard (2) and Lake (6). The
building was approved in March 1915. Requests for tenders sent on 29 May 1915
and registration of tenders started on 30 September 1915.(1)

1. The O-class. The Electric
Boat Company designed the O-1, O-2, O-3, O-4, O-5, O-6, O-7, O-8, O-9 and O-10,
the Lake Torpedo Boat Company the O-11, O-12, O-13, O-14, O-15 and O-16.
Displacement while submerged was 629 long tons/639 tons.
