American light cruiser USS Omaha (CL-4) 1916-1946


Of the Omaha-class light cruisers, first classified as a scout cruise .Her building was ordered on 29 August 1916, contracted on 26 December 1916 with a supplement on 21 February 1919, laid down by the Todd Dry Dock&Construction Co., Tacoma, Washington on 6 December 1918, launched by Louise Bushnell White on 14 December 1920, completed on 1 August 1921, commissioned on 24 February 1923, decommissioned on 1 November 1945, stricken on 28 November 1945 and finally broken up at the Philadelphia Navy Yard in February 1946.

Building costs of hull and machinery 1.541.396 US dollars. Call sign NISL. Standard displacement 7.163 tons/7.050 long ton and as dimensions 169,32 (over all-x 16,87 x 4,11 (mean) metres or 555.6 x 55.4 x 13.4 feet. The 4 Westhinghouse reduction geared steam turbines and 12 Yarrow boilers supplied 90.000 ihp during trials and delivered via 4 screws allowing a speed of 33,7-35(design)  knots. Range with a speed of 10 knots was during 8.460-10.000 (design) nautical miles. Her crew numbered 458 men (in peace time). Fitted out with 2 catapult amidships placed to launch the 2 floatplanes she could carry with her.  The armour consisted of a 7,6cm/3” thick belt, a 3,8cm/1.5” thick deck, 3,8-7,6cm/1.5-3” thick bulkheads with the conning tower protected by 3,8cm/1.5” thick armour. The original armament consisted of 2x2-15,2cm/6” /53 guns, 8x-1-6”/15,2cm /53 guns, 2-7,6cm/3” /5- anti aircraft guns, 2x3 and 2/2 submerged 53,3cm/21” torpedo tubes and 224 mines which within short time after she was completed were removed to create more crew accommodation. In 1945 consisted the armament of 2x2-15,2cm/6” /53 guns, 8x-1-6”/15,2cm /53 guns, 8-7,6cm/3” /5- anti aircraft guns,3x2-4cm/1.6” Bogors guns, 14x1-2cm/0.79” Oerlikon guns and 53,3cm/21” torpedo tubes.
